Amalienborg - The Royal residence
The Queen’s main residence and an architectural gem.
Following the great fire of Copenhagen in 1794, which razed the government palace, Christiansborg, to the ground, the Royal Family became neighbours. Constructed in the 1700's, Amalienborg palace is considered one of the greatest works of Danish Rococo architecture. It consists of four identical buildings - The Christian VII’s Palace, The Christian VIII’s Palace, The Frederik VIII’s Palace and The Christian IX’s Palace – around an octagonal courtyard. This is the main residence of Her Majesty the Queen. When the flag is raised on Christian IX’s Palace, it signals that the Queen is home.
Shopping & Design
Steps away from the best in Danish design.
Kongens Nytorv, or “the king’s square”, is a central square where prominent institutions, shops, restaurants and the multi-story department store, Magasin du Nord, are located. Kongens Nytorv is also one end of the famous shopping street, Strøget, with City Hall Square being located at the other end. On Strøget you will find several department stores like Illums Bolighus, Bodum Home and Hay House, which are each essential to visit if you are a fan of Danish design.
The waterfront and our historic schooners
Enjoy the charm of past and present along the waterfront.
The Copenhagen Admiral Hotel is located on Copenhagen’s picturesque waterfront. A stroll in either direction will take you past notable landmarks including The Little Mermaid at Langelinie, Amaliehaven and The Royal Danish Playhouse. Many beautiful ships and boats dock along the quayside, among which are the three historic schooners Halmø, Mira and Lilla Dan that sit right in front of the hotel. Halmø is owned by the hotel and all three ships can be hired for cruises or for transfer to the hotel.
The Little Mermaid, the Citadel and the Gefion Fountain
The Little Mermaid
The world famous sculpture created by Edvard Eriksen.
One evening in 1909, Carl Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg Breweries, attended the Royal Theatre to see 'The Little Mermaid' – a ballet based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Deeply moved by the performance, he commissioned sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a statue. Edvard Eriksen immediately set to work and had his wife pose as a model. In 1913, the famous bronze figure was unveiled at the Langelinie Harbour Promenade as a gift from Carl Jacobsen to the city of Copenhagen.
The Citadel - Kastellet
Among the best preserved fortifications in Northern Europe.
Founded by Christian IV 1626, Kastellet was originally constructed as a fortification for the city. In the past, Kastellet was connected to a ring of bastioned ramparts that once encircled Copenhagen. Today, the buildings in Kastellet are used as military barracks, but the area is open to the public and is a popular destination for a brisk walk thanks to its greenery and idyllic settings.
Gefion Fountain
An impressive, scuptural fountain on the harbour.
The Gefion Fountain is a large fountain positioned on the harbour front. It features a large-scale group of animal figures being driven forward by the legendary Norse goddess, Gefjun. The largest monument in Copenhagen, it is located in Langelinie Park next to Kastellet and also functions as a wishing well.
The Royal Theatre
The Opera, the Royal Danish Playhouse and the Old Stage.
The Royal Danish Theatre consists of three main venues: the Opera House, the Playhouse and the Old Stage. The danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg created the Playhouse, which received a RIBA European Award in 2008 for design. The Opera House was the work of the renowned Danish architect Henning Larsen, with a number of Danish artists contributing to the décor. The Old Stage has graced Kongens Nytorv since 1748.
All east-facing rooms at the hotel have an impressive view of the Opera and Playhouse.
Tivoli Gardens
Fun for all at one of the world’s oldest amusement parks.
Right in the middle of the city, you will find the more than 100-year old amusement park, Tivoli Gardens. An enchanted world of exotic architecture, exquisite gardens and scenery, visitors can enjoy theatres, open air stages, restaurants and cafés. Tivoli’s 26 rides have something for all ages and tastes, while the beautiful flower gardens, the vivid illuminations and the original Pantomime Theatre from 1874 afford calmer entertainment. You won’t find the uniquely pleasurable atmosphere anywhere else.
